Barry Naimark Charity Skins Bonspiel Rocked the VCC

The 16th annual Barry Naimark Charity Skins Bonspiel came to an exciting close on Sunday afternoon. Many of Sunday's games were close affairs, and the final scorelines often did not reflect the skins money carry-overs and the paper-thin differences between some of the teams.

The 2013 Champions were Team Forrest (featured left to right: Andrew Forrest, Jan Bos, Becky Campbell and Lori Isfield). Team Forrest defeated Team Shen (Randie Shen, Sandra Comadina, Brendon Liu and Kristen Fewster) in the A final that came down to a draw to the button.

2013 event chair, Mark Robinson, recounted the exciting finish: "Team Shen drew to about an inch above the top four-foot. Then Forrest drew the button; white all around the rock. It was unbelievable."

Thank you to all 40 teams who participated and help raise funds for a very worthy cause - Aunt Leah's Society. This year's fundraising total has set another new donation record from the event: together, we raised more than $6,500. The support from the companies and individuals who donated prizes made this amazing total possible and is greatly appreciated.

Kudos are extended to everyone who contributed to make the 16th Annual Barry Naimark Charity Skins Bonspiel possible. The organizing committee - chaired by Mark Robinson - included Scott Allen, Brad Blackwell, Jan Bos, Colin Chan, Craig Coyne, Sam Corea, Siobhan Holladay, Jen Lucas, Thom Lutes, Kathy McInnes, Jerry McKenzie, and Luke Opacic. Additional volunteers who also stepped forward to help the committee ensure the four-day event ran smoothly were Dawn Chinn, Allison Dentoom, Nylene Geyer, Margaret Hilson, Gary Lubin, Carol Kent, Heather Kisbee, Marilyn Kerfoot, Ron McKay, Kathy Willey, and Margaret Yoshida. Plus, the event had added help from our junior program as Aiselinn, Noelle and Mason made contributions throughout the weekend. Lastly, all of the Club's staff from our ice team, administration team and lounge team who pitched in all weekend long deserve a round of applause.

David Thompson Secondary is fourth in the province

While the VCC will be hopping this weekend with the 16th Annual Barry Naimark Charity Skins Bonspiel, some of our younger members were competing at the Kamloops Curling Club from February 28 to March 2 for provincial glory.

David Thompson Secondary - from the Club's high school league - competed in Kamloops for the 2013 British Columbia Boys Secondary School Curling Championship. The team finished in fourth place with a 4-3 record, including wins over two of the three medal-winning teams.

The David Thompson team is skip Matt Chan, third Kevin Chen, second Benny Jiang, lead Niko Savas, fifth John Dinh and the coaches are Greg Alyward and Roger Chan. You can check out the team's results at playdowns.com.

Heading Home in March

This past weekend saw four VCC teams entered in the regional playdowns for the 2013 Williams Moving & Storage BC Mixed Curling Championships. With four berths on the line from Feb 22-24 at the Delta Thistle Curling Club and 19 teams vying for the opportunity to compete at this year's provincials - being held at the VCC from March 14-17 - two VCC teams will be competing on home ice.

Congratulations to Team Wakefield (Jay Wakefield, Rebecca Turley, Jeff Cawker, Michelle Dunn) and Team Switzer (Keith Switzer, Sandra Comadina, Leonard Firkus, Carman Cheng) on qualifying. Team Wakefield had an impressive run as they won their first three games before losing the A final. The team regrouped, though, to win two more games and capture the B bracket. Team Switzer, meanwhile, won one and lost one in the A bracket and repeated the one win, one loss pattern in the B bracket. They then got on a roll to win three games in a row on Sunday to capture one of two qualifying positions in the C bracket.

Additional kudos are also extended to the two other VCC teams who competed in the Mixed playdowns. Team Hall (George Hall, Shelley Birston, Kevin Mintenko, Krista Frazee) finished the weekend with two wins and three loses, bowing out in the C quarterfinals. Meanwhile, Team Bos (Jan Bos, Amy Gibson, Andrew Gray, Pamela Lai) battled hard but were eliminated in their first game from the C bracket.

Lastly, a couple of other teams - Meger and Watson - had VCC members competing on them.

Many thanks to this year's Doubles Bonspiel chair - Siobhan Holladay - and the supporting team of Kathy McInnes, Scott Allen and Brad Blackwell for their work done before and during the event. Additional kudos to our day-of volunteers - Heather Kisbee, Kathryn Willey and Keltie Worrall - and the Club's ice and lounge staff for helping host a great event.
