From Four to Forty – Experience Abounds at the Canadian Direct BC Men’s Curling Championship Presented by Automation One
A broad range of curling experience will be on the ice from February 5-9, 2014 when 16 teams from across British Columbia take on the challenge of determining who will represent the province at the Tim Hortons Brier in Kamloops in March.
The experience of the 84 participating curlers ranges from those with less than four years of curling under their belts (making their first trip to a provincial championship) to seasoned veterans with more than 40 years of curling and multiple trips to provincial, national and world championships. The field includes past junior, men’s, mixed and senior provincial champions, Olympic gold medallists and those who have represented Canada at world curling championships.
With more than 40 games from the first round to the final, will a familiar name be awarded the gold? Or will we see a “Cinderella team” sweep its way to the final? The only way to find out is to come, cheer and be part of the action. Tickets start as low as $5 for one draw and $35 for the entire event, and are available online or at the VCC.
The VCC was well represented this past weekend in Salmon Arm at the final playdown for the 2014 Canadian Direct Insurance BC Men's Curling Championship, presented by AutomationOne. Team Schneider (Stephen Schneider, Shawn Eklund, Rick Feeney, Brant Amos, and Adam Cseke) represented the Club well but bowed out of the competition in the C qualifier semifinals.
Meanwhile, two other teams had strong VCC connections. Team Brower featured two VCC members (Jan Bos and Chris Faa), and lost incredibly close one point games in both the B and C finals. Meanwhile, Team Gessner had one VCC member (Brian Gessner) and they lost out in the C semifinals. Click here for a full summary of event scores and more.
Despite there being no VCC team playing next month at home, there will still be 16 great teams - including 2013 Roar of the Rings runners up Team Morris - vying for the crown at the 2014 BC Men's Championship. Be sure to book off February 5-9 to come on down to the VCC to watch the province's best compete.
TEAM GIBSON (Rebecca Turley, Amy Gibson, Carman Cheng and Michelle Dunn, with coach Larry MacDonald) wrapped up their week-long challenge on Friday of taking on the rest of the province at the 2014 Scotties BC Women’s Curling Championship, presented by Best Western, at the Prince George Golf and Country Club.
Heading into their final game of the round robin, Team Gibson was in a three-way tie for seventh and needed to win as well as have some help from other game results to possibly create a six-way tiebreaker. The other results came in as desired, but Team Gibson was victim to another close and heartbreaking loss as they were on the wrong side of a 6-5 decision - decided by a measure - to Team Jensen from Victoria to finish in ninth place.
During the event, Team Gibson had a number of very close games during the event and should also be congratulated for defeating the four-time defending provincial champion, Team Scott of Kelowna. Congratulations and we're proud Team Gibson calls the VCC home. Click here to read all of the final scores from Team Gibson's first of hopefully many appearances at the BC Scotties.
