Junior Development
Welcome to the home page for the Junior Development Program!
Schedule Change
Our apologies to everyone who showed up on March 6th and found themselves locked out and unable to play. To make up the day, we will extend the Junior Program to include April 17th.
Due to a recent conflict with another program at the club, the Junior league session slated for March 20th has been rescheduled to March 27th.
Remaining Dates (as of March 13th)
So there is no confusion, the dates remaining in the Junior Program are:
March 27
April 10
April 17
The Junior Program is the place for our younger curlers to learn the game, develop curling skills, and simply have a lot of fun. Please contact Jan Bos if you have any questions.
Program Goals:
The primary goal of this program is to instill in our younger players the interest and desire to learn the game of curling in a fun and challenging environment.
To do this, we will focus on skill development such as The Delivery, Sweeping Technique, The Turns (in turn, out turn), Line of Delivery, Weight Judging (sweepers), How to Call a Game, Strategy, Terms of the Game, Communication and Teamwork. Most sessions will be on the ice. Some sessions, like Strategy, will be off ice and will then go on ice for a game.
2009-2010 Junior Development Program Dates:
- October 3, 10, 17, 31
- November 7, 21, 28
- December 5, 12, 19
- January 9, 16, 30
- February 6 & then the club's regular programming is on hiatus for the rest of February due to the 2010 Winter Games
- March 13, 20, 27
- April 10, 17
What to Wear?
Please wear sweatpants or loose fitting pants that won’t restrict your movement on the ice. It can be cold, so wear layers and bring a toque, gloves or mittens.
For footwear, please wear runners with a rubberlike sole (not plastic), and make sure the bottoms are clean and free of all dirt and stones. If possible, dedicate a pair of runners for curling use only. Wear your street shoes to the club, then change into your curling shoes.
Program Coaches:
The VCC's Junior Development Program will be run by a number of certified coaches and assistants. They all look forward to a fun year filled with laughter and skill improvement throughout the entire season.
Other Program Details:
- Cost: $151.25 per person for the season-long program
- Age: 8 - 15
- Register: all participating young curlers are junior members at the club so are asked to please register through the club's online system.
(Sept 20/09) Please note the VCC Junior Development Program was strongly supported in the past by funding from the Province of BC's Gaming Program. Unfortunately, we just received a update from the province that our funds have been reduced to only 25% of the past few years' funding.
The VCC, though, is still commited to our Junior Development Program, and we thank all of the interested parents and young curlers for your patience as we have finalized the details on how we can most effectively deliver a junior program with heavily-reduced funding.
